Some students regularly visit museums, travel to new places, explore historic sites, and participate in cultural activities. Others may have had fewer opportunities to experience places beyond their own communities.</p><p style="font-size:16px; line-height:1.8; margin:0 0 32px; color:#3D3D3D;">Yet throughout the school day, we frequently ask students to connect new information to what they already know. Providing meaningful experiences&mdash;whether through a traditional field trip, a walking trip through the local community, a museum visit, or a carefully planned virtual experience&mdash;can help build the background knowledge students draw upon in reading, writing, science, social studies, and other subjects.</p><!-- ========================================================     WHY FIELD TRIPS MATTER     ======================================================== --><div role="heading" aria-level="2" style="font-family:Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif; font-size:29px; line-height:1.25; font-weight:700; font-style:italic; color:#102C3F !important; margin:38px 0 10px;">Why Field Trips Matter</div><div style="width:58px; height:3px; background:#C99A2E !important; margin:0 0 22px;"></div><p style="font-size:16px; line-height:1.8; margin:0 0 27px; color:#3D3D3D;">A well-planned field trip is much more than a day away from school. They were part of Spain's larger effort to colonize Alta California beginning in the late eighteenth century.</div><div style="margin:0 0 8px 0;">Understanding the missions means examining questions such as:</div><!-- CUSTOM BULLETS --><div style="margin:0 0 14px 0;"><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;Why did Spain establish missions in Alta California?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;What roles did missions, presidios, and pueblos play in colonization?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who lived in California before Spanish colonization?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;How did mission life affect California's Native peoples?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;What roles did religion, agriculture, economics, architecture, music, and skilled trades play?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;How did the Mission Period change California?</div><div style="margin:3px 0;">&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;What happened as the missions were secularized?</div></div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">Questions like these move students beyond simply memorizing the names and locations of California's 21 missions. They encourage students to think historically and examine the Mission Period as part of the larger story of California.</div><!-- NATIVE CALIFORNIAN PERSPECTIVES --><div style="color:#12354b; font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:26px; font-style:normal; font-weight:700; line-height:1.25; margin:26px 0 10px 0;">Include Native Californian Perspectives</div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">A more complete study of the Mission Period needs to include the experiences of California's Native peoples.</div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">Native communities had lived throughout California for thousands of years before Spanish colonization. They possessed their own languages, traditions, economies, technologies, relationships with the land, and belief systems.</div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">Missionization brought profound changes.</div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">When selecting classroom resources, teachers can help students examine Native experiences alongside Spanish and missionary perspectives. Students can investigate how Native peoples responded to missionization, how daily life changed, and how Native communities preserved culture and identity.</div><div style="margin:0 0 12px 0;">This creates opportunities for students to compare sources, recognize differing perspectives, and understand that historical events can be experienced very differently by the people involved.</div><!-- PRIMARY SOURCES --><div style="color:#12354b;
