SOC 900 focuses on the Southern Mother Lode region surrounding Mariposa, Agua Fria, Hornitos, and La Grange. Through historical readings, oral-history interviews, photographs, video experiences, historic sites, narratives, and digital resources, you will examine the region's role in the California Gold Rush and the settlement of the West.
The course looks beyond famous names to include the experiences of ordinary and extraordinary people who helped shape Gold Rush communities. You will also investigate immigration, interactions with Native Americans, mining technologies, environmental effects, historic buildings, churches, cemeteries, museums, dredge sites, and other evidence that helps tell the story of the Mother Lode.
